From Spain to Ireland

English

This statue has been sculpted by renowned Galician artist Armando Martinez, Named a Knight of the Order of the Camino de Santiago in 2021, this was not his first commission associated with the Camino de Santiago. Pilgrims walking the Celtic Camino and Camino Inglés in Galicia will see his statue of Margery Kemp in Sigieiro, the starting point for the last stage before reaching Santiago de Compostela. She was the first known English pilgrim to walk the Camino Inglés in 1417. This work is the artist’s interpretation of the Romanesque statue of the apostle Saint James that was made at the end of the 11th century by Master Mateo for the Pórtico de la Gloria in the Cathedral de Santiago de Compostela. In Master Mateo’s creation, Saint James is not a pilgrim, but rather the apostle who carries a staff and scroll to show that he is preaching. This work has been donated by the Asociación de Concellos do Camiño Inglés (Galicia) and was designed and sculpted by the artist especially for the Camino Society Ireland clg. and inaugurated in the Church of Saint James, (Dublin 8), on 16 March 2025 by the Honorary President of the Asociación de Concellos do Camiño Inglés, Manuel Mirás Franqueira.
